Originally it was going to be another DIY ornament with a steampunk flair, but the project lasted several days and was finally finished after Christmas, that and the gears that I printed out were larger than expected.
I like the end result even if they were not exactly what I intended. But oh well.
Difficulty Level: One
So here is what you need:
Paper to use in your printer
Cardstock scrapbooking paper (Alternatively you can use a cereal box and any decorative paper you'd like)
Glue
American Accents Premium Metallic Base Coat for Patina (or any other spraypaint metallic color), I love this stuff.
Gloves
Box
Scissors or Exacto knife
double sided tape
yarn or something to hang pieces with
Step One: Create Your Own Gears
Go to this site (CLICK ME) to create your own gears and print them out. I used 8 different types with varying sizes and spokes.
Step Two: Cut Out Gears
This is the hardest part, it takes an amazing amount of patience if you don't have an Exacto knife (which I did not and because I didn't it took me several days to cut out the pieces)
Step Three: Cut Out Circles
Using the Cardstock Scrapbooking paper create Circles or any other shape you desire. Two for each gear, than choose which side you want which: the glued spraypainted gear on the paper (end result below)
or the mostly spraypainted where the gear shows the paper (end result below).
Step Four: Spraypaint
Using the doublesided tape carefully cut out the tape to secure it to the paper. Place inside the box and glove yourself up (and open a door if you are inside). Spraypaint away. Let dry.
Step Five: Glueing the Pieces Together
Glue the gear to the decorative paper and glue to the other circle or shape and place under heavy books to prevent warping.
Step Six: Finishing Touches
Create a hole using a hole punch, scissors or whatever you have on hand. Use yarn to hang the decorum wherever you'd like. Embellish the pieces as you see fit. I personally don't like a lot of bling, so I left them as they were, I like the spraypainted side the best to the point where if I decide to make more of them both sides will be spaypainted.
Enjoy!!
